The National World War II Museum has long been working on plans to build its own hotel, and the museum finally made the public announcement yesterday.  Plans call for an eight-story, $65 million hotel and conference center at 1000 Magazine Street.  The site is currently an empty lot.

Renderings for the beautifully designed hotel tower, a modern twist on art-deco design, were submitted to the Historic District Landmarks Commission this week.

The WWII Museum has wanted to develop its own hotel for years.  The museum brings in 700,000 visitors annually, 85% of which are from out of state.  It just made sense.  Rumor is that the currently unnamed hotel will be named The Higgins Hotel.

Plans call for building a 234-room hotel to open in 2019.  The hotel will features a 22,000 square foot conference center, a fitness center, business center, a restaurant and bar, rooftop and a swimming pool.

The team developing the hotel includes the Museum as the owner, Chicago-based Hostmark Hospitality Group as the operator, Florida-based Nichols Brosch Wurst Wolfe 7 Associates Inc. as the designer., and New Orleans-based Palmisano Contractors as the general contractor.

The WWII Museum has been on a tear lately, with recent additions including a monstrous parking garage next to the hotel site, the construction of the $10 million Canopy of Peace, the construction of two new buildings on Magazine Street, and construction of the $3 million pedestrian bridge over St. Joseph Street.
